Shift the Power

Shift the Power strives to empower and lift up communities to a more equal way of undertaking sustainable development. The movement seeks to replaces top-down model of traditional development with ‘people-led development’ approaches where people determine for themselves what is important to them. In 2016, the Global Fund for Community Foundations launched #ShiftThePower to amplify the role of community-led institutions – community foundations, and likeminded organisations to meaningfully participate in philanthropy and sustainable development.

Shift the Power is a call to question how development is done and seeks to provide working community-driven solutions.

What does Shift the Power

mean?

Shift the power is about changing the mindset on how development happens from the donor giving side and how communities receive development aid from the funders.

It is about questioning the status quo on how development initiatives are thought, designed, and delivered in the communities.

It is about questioning the current development models which perceive Global South as receivers of development aid from the Global North.

It is about changing the mindset that Global South can also be solution solvers – not a preserve of Global North.

Shifting the Power means empowering communities to know their value, to know their power, to know their resources, to know their culture, to know their skills so that those skills can be changed and become contributions. The solutions which can help us solve the challenges facing the world today.

Shifting these actions are not about changing he names in the donor languages to be such as co-creators, co-implementers and co-designers,

It is about action. It is about working with communities with tangible actions. It about empowering communities to know that they are equal partners in providing solutions to the challenges that are pressing the world today.

“ShiftThePower means changing mindsets on how development happens both at the donor (giving) side and community (receiving) side. It is about adding value, being flexible, responsive and innovative in development delivery. It is about giving power to communities to know their value, voice their aspirations and become resilient and prosperous. It is about taking a pause to cool off, reflect and ask about past, current and future development scenarios.”
